Baraka Betrothal is a boutique Muslim wedding services agency
Why work with us?
Baraka Betrothal prides itself in providing culturally relevant wedding officiation. We recognize how diverse the American Muslim community is; it would be a disservice to couples if we operated with a one-size-fits-all approach to nikah ceremonies.
That is why our licensed officiants will walk you through the nikah process and note any preferences you have for your ceremony during an introductory call. Thereafter, they will help you craft a personalized marriage contract, deliver a sermon that incorporates messaging that you would like highlighted, then deliver your marriage license to the clerk’s office after your ceremony.
We can also direct you to wedding vendors we trust who provide decorative nikah contracts, photography, videography, henna, and other services. Please contact us if you need a referral.
What is a nikah?
Nikah is an Arabic word which refers to marriage. It is a contract between bride and groom that establishes an everlasting bond. According to the Hanafi school, a nikah consists of mutual consent (i.e. an offer and an acceptance) between the bride and groom (or their representatives), mahr (dowry) gifted by the groom to the bride, and a set of witnesses that testify to the ceremony.
Each nikah ceremony will be different depending on your unique circumstances. Our officiants will work with you to ensure that all of the Islamic legal requirements are met for your ceremony.
What’s in a name?
Baraka is an Arabic word which means blessings. One of the supplications of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ upon the union of a bride and groom was reported as: “May God bless for you your spouse, bestow blessings upon you, and unite you in goodness”.
Betrothal means engagement, but in an archaic usage, it referred to being given in marriage to someone. Despite it being a formalized practice of other faiths, there is no religious rite for engagement in Islam.
From engagement to matrimony, Baraka Betrothal will be there every step of the way to ensure your wedding process is blessed!
